Washington's Bird Alert HotlinesIn Washington State, as in nearly every other state around the country, bird alert hotlines are set up for us to: 1) report our rare bird sightings; and 2) to find out where unusual or rare birds have been seen recently. The hotlines are set up so that you can leave a message reporting the bird you have just looked at and you can listen to the reports of birds seen by other people. The reports generally have directions to the location of the sighting and the person's phone number in case you want more information from them. In this day and age when many of us carry cellular telephones, some of the reports are very fresh with the person still looking at the bird as they make the phone call. If you are vacationing or birding around the state, you can call one of the hotlines to see if there has been a bird seen in that area that you might be able to look for. Write these phone numbers in the front of your bird book so that you have them close at hand. And don't forget your phone! |
